This week, we have snowflakes on the doppler radar. Whether it wants to or not, summer will be here before we know it.

Summer for us means more than just beach weekends and water ice. It means that we get to share our office with motivated interns who are eager to learn the ins and outs of a design studio.

We are seeking applicants on the path to becoming a stellar designer or a savvy, marketing/business/communications specialist. Work flow will vary day to day. Part-time and full-time positions available.

Please send your resume and cover letter with your availability to info((at))bajdesign((dot))com.

Thanks!

TED 2011: The Rediscovery of Wonder united cross-disciplinary leaders in technology, entertainment and design.

"For 2011, we are assembling a cast of characters capable of stirring the imagination as never before. Explorers, storytellers, photographers, scientific pioneers, visionaries and provocateurs from all parts of the globe. And we won’t be forgetting the other, harder-edged meaning of wonder -- where “I wonder” equals “I ponder.” We’ll be adding in strong servings of thoughtful insight, so that the possibilities we dream of are anchored in reality."

Check the TED 2011 website for news and as always check in with TED.com throughout the year as they post videos from this year's conference.

She is a fabulous storyteller and brought the audience on her journey through France in an exploration of Jewish French cuisine. I learned that Jewish men introduced the eggplant to France by bringing seeds from India. Of course, you can't talk about food without eating! So, there were plates of Zahav's famous hummus and sandwiches from Hershel's East Side Deli. Yum!

I'm a huge fan of cookbooks and food anthropology so the idea of listening to someone's stories about food while eating food entices me. Good thing this organization offers more events throughout the year:

Edible World programs let you savor amazing cuisine while hearing a tale inspired by that food.

They assert that the answer is not yes or no, but requires the consideration of three important factors: content, control and impact. Whether print is the right choice for you depends upon your product, your desired impact and the way you want customers or readers to look at your company. Print isn't always the best option, but neither is the web.

Larsen suggests that you ask yourself "Which media best supports your communication goals?" Once you've established this, "everything else will fall into place."

The results have been transforming for the school image. The SP2 stories and achievements read brighter and inspire new engagement for students, alumni, donors and social policy leaders.

Nadina Deigh, University of Pennsylvania SP2 Editorial Director and Associate Dean of Development and Alumni Relations, recalls her experience:

“BAJ Design was called upon to work under a very tight deadline. They expertly created a realistic timeline and have done an excellent job of keeping the project on track. Their team spearheaded artistic design of the book, bringing a fresh and contemporary look to our publication. Now, the publication is much more reader-friendly, yet maintains its academic integrity, while capturing the essence and mission of our School.

Working with BAJ Design has been a pleasure. I am delighted that the team has interpreted and translated our vision perfectly! The result is a grade-A publication that will wow the entire SP2 community!”

We have streamlined processes for writing, image selection and art direction for future publication and are currently working on next year’s edition. [see BAJ's SP2 Review project]

Developed to connect the local community with its own talent, the x version of the prestigious TED brings accessibility to a population used to watching the talks online rather than in the same room with the speakers.

From the first step into the Kimmel Center, you knew that something big was about to happen. The first presentor set the stage for the remaining speakers and I'm not sure any of them reached her bar. With her Presidential trivia and poetic enthusiasm, Cristin O'Keefe Aptowicz, reminded us that we can be artists and have a full-time job. We can work on the side until we are ready to make the jump into the world of the unknown. Regardless, I believe that we can bring our passion into whatever we do to contribute to bettering our society.

Next up was Science Leadership Academy's Principal Chris Bartlett who brilliantly stated, "Information is great, but knowledge and wisdom are better." His intuitive approach to education is changing how the next generation will approach the problems of our times. To drive his point home, he pointed around the room to the cameras and video equipment that his students were using to record the day.

It would not be possible to talk about Philadelphia Right Here, Right Now without bringing food into the fold. Both Nic Esposito and Chef Michael Solomonov dissected this topic through urban farming and culinary visions. Esposito began his talk by debunking the typical environmentalist approach: the world is going to end. Instead, he celebrated the amazing work that is being done by activists all around us in the nooks and crannies of neighborhoods that fill our city. He challenged everyone to return to their communities and sew seeds of sustainbility.

Solomonov spoke from the heart about how his brother's death in the Israeli army inspired him to create the concept for Zahav. His charisma and wit balanced the serious tone similarly to his style of cooking. (Have you ever tried his hummus?)

Director of the Philadelphia Youth Orchestra's Tune Up Philly had his musicians join him onstage. It was breathtaking to see the intimacy that these children have with their respected instruments. They played several variations of "Twinkle, Twinkle Little Star" with sparkles of joy in their eyes. Did I mention that this program only started in September?

Other highlights included Simon Hauger, innovative teacher at West Philadelphia High School. He is working with students to design hybrid vehicles and win competitions. He believes that you "can't teach critical thinking skills without critical conditions." Then, Bill Covaleski, Founder of Victory Brewing Company, gave an education on the history of the flourishing craft beer industry without plugging his local brewery once. Kudos for that! Stephen Powers challenged the myth that all graffiti is bad. He is responsible for the Love Letters project across 20 blocks in West Philly along the El (also on the cover of the new City Paper Primer). Powers showed images of a neighborhood in Brazil that he transformed with his vision and cans of spray paint. The close of the day belonged to the powerful Ursula Rucker. Her vocals deepened the souls of all the attendees to properly end the conference.

A BIG thanks to all of those who organized the event!!

Tomorrow 600 people will gather at the Kimmel Center to participate in a thought-provoking, dynamic event hosted by TEDxPhilly. For those of you who don't have the golden ticket, no worries. Live streaming will be available on the TEDxPhilly website and at the Piazza and National Mechanics. All are welcomed to celebrate and decompress at the afterparty at the University of the Arts starting at 6 p.m.

Seventeen speakers will frame their talks under the theme: Right Here, Right Now. For sessions -Systems & Societies, Culture & Meaning, Incredible Machines and Between the Ears. Some of our local favorites will have a chance to impress the audience with all of the innovative work and creativity that they are bringing to our community. Congrats to the TEDxPhilly team for putting together what looks to be an spectacular event!!

I'm not sure the relevance of the second point, but we definitely need to secure a trusted water source. Cities have water departments charged with cleaning the water system to ensure it is potable. There are nonprofits whose missions are dedicated to prevent water pollution so our cities do not have to spend so much money cleaning our water. Then, comes business: the bottled water business. Usually transported in plastic, there are two companies who are challenging the status quo with a carton and glass.

The theme for this month is: if not now, when.

After Thanksgiving, we'll find ourselves deep into holiday season. Take time in these next two weeks to write down a few goals - both personal and for your business. What can you accomplish before the end of this year?

Touch screens are not affected by the heat in your fingers; rather they react to the natural bioelectricity in your skin. Tiny amounts of moisture, salts, and oils on your skin create conductivity allowing electrons to flow between you and your device. Regular gloves will prevent this current from flowing.

Not to worry, a new company, Agloves, have created an innovative solution with silver, the most electrically conductive element. Their gloves are made with silver-coated nylon fibers knitted into the fabric so the conductivity stays with your touch.

That's the kind of outside-the-box thinking we enjoy.

Do you still have your childhood autograph book? Besides Mickey and Minnie Mouse, my first "real" autograph was Billy Joel. My cousin got married in the Hamptons and there was a boat dock next to the venue. Someone told us that the "Piano Man" was working on his boat so of course I went down to meet him. I was seven. I remember going home that night and contemplating where I should put the autograph. I think I even slept with it under my pillow. Now, I don't even know where it is.

We've entered the digital world. At a rally in Seattle, we had a monumental moment in our history. President Obama signed his autograph on an iPAD. Yes, you read that correct: iPAD. Talk about progress...

Strap on your helmet and you can venture through the city or take the scenic route behind the art museum. We are also lucky to have independent bike shops in almost every neighborhood. However, none of them have a creative bike wall to store trade-in bikes like this shop in Altlandsberg, Germany, about 30km from Berlin. It started with 40 bikes and has now grown to 120. The bikes range in age and model. Owner, Peter Horstmann, says that business is up 40% this year – in part due to this creative advertising. Very cool!

It is not much different than its cousin, spring cleaning. I'm preparing to make a clothes donation in time for the winter and saving some scraps to make something crafty with my sewing machine.

I'm inspired by what others do with "trash" and wanted to share a story about Jason Mecier – a San Franciso based artist – who has been making trash into art for about 15 years. He get his materials from different sources – friends, family, fans and sometimes the subjects themselves.

1800Recycling says: "Mecier's mission is to capture the public image of his subjects and in a sense, his portraits are literally constructed from the recycled detritus of the lives of the celebrities he portrays. The use of donated items transforms the process into a two-way work of communication in which the image is implicitly permitted, encouraged and nurtured by its subject."

Think about what you can do with your "trash"...

Last night, I found a new chocolate bar at Milk and Honey Market from West Chester chocolatier Eclat Chocolate. Named Happy Cat Organic Chocolate Bar, it is a limited-edition collaboration with Delaware County Happy Cat Farm Grown. Fresh, organic herbs married into organic chocolate equals bliss.

I tried the lavender flavor, which was subtle in taste not too floral with a decadent finish. Other flavors include Rosemary, Basil and Lemon Verbena.

Trust me and try some!

It bridges a broad audience with a very specific message: we are all artists. In his definition, not all artists are painters or writers; rather, lawyers and servers also have the potential to share their art in how they debate or treat a customer.

"Art is unique, new and challenging to the status quo. It's not decoration. It's something that causes change. Art cannot be merely commerce. It must also be a gift."

This book speaks to those who dare to deliver their gifts. He uses colorful examples of people and ideas in his concise writings. There is no business strategy or analytical prose. Instead, Godin connects to his audience through an honest appeal. His sincerity shines through to give each one of us the confidence that we are capable of finding our passion through sharing our gifts of art.

If you've read some of our other blog posts, you know that we are Seth Godin superfans so here's what other people have to say:

"If Seth Godin didn't exist we'd need to invent him-that's how indispensable he is! You hold in your hands a compelling, accessible, and purpose-filled book. Read it, and do yourself a big favor. Your future will thank you!"
-Alan Webber, Founder, Fast Company

"This is what the future of work (and the world) looks like. Actually, it's already happening around you."
-Tony Hsieh, CEO, Zappos.com

"Thousands of authors write business books every year, but only a handful reach star status and the A-list lecture circuit. Fewer still - one, to be exact - can boast his own action figure....Godin delivers his combination of counterintuitive thinking and a great sense of fun."
-BusinessWeek

I would definitely recommend everyone adds this book to your reading list.

On October 1st, they will be release their contemporary approach to economics in their Freakonomics documentary. Here's the synopisis:

Alex Gibney (Enron:The Smartest Guys in the Room, Casino Jack and the United States of Money) delivers a visually arresting look at the crumbling facade of Sumo wrestling and exposes searing and violent truths about this ancient and revered sport. Morgan Spurlock (Super Size Me) offers up a buoyant and revealing angle on the repercussions of baby names. Rachel Grady and Heidi Ewing (Jesus Camp) balance levity and candor with their eye–opening profile of underachieving kids incentivized to learn with cold hard cash. Finally, Eugene Jarecki, who brought us the unforgettably powerful Why We Fight, investigates an unsettling theory to explain why crime rates dramatically dropped in the early 90s. Seth Gordon (The King of Kong) weaves the pieces together with brisk interludes, providing context and commentary from the authors. Freakonomics exposes the hidden side of everything, debunking conventional wisdom, and revealing what answers may come if one just asks the right questions.

Definitely a movie worth viewing...

A recent blog post by marketing expert and author Seth Godin discusses the tensions between senior and junior management. Godin argues that companies can lose pace with what’s new when senior management continues to make decisions. He stresses that it’s important to bring junior employees into the decision making process – not necessarily because they are younger, but because they will offer fresher ideas to the company.

Executives that stay with one company for too long are more prone to missing trends because they tend to stick with decisions that are comfortable.

Godin ends his post with this quote: "When a distinguished but elderly scientist states that something is possible, he is almost certainly right. When he states that something is impossible, he is probably wrong." - Arthur C. Clarke

NACI Architecture has recently designed two new Cathcart schools in Snohomish, Washington, which were designed to bring nature into the classroom. The school sits within a second-growth forest and the campus has the backdrop of mountains and trees. Practically every aspect of the Cathcart building design embraces nature and the natural landscape. As of now, we are the wild card seat, but as in any major league playoffs, anything could happen.

Last night's game lasted 16 innings and ended unfavorably for our Phils. Fans did, however, get to enjoy the second playing of "Take Me Out To The Ballgame" during the 14th inning stretch. Years ago, I went to one of the longest games ever in baseball history: Game 4 of the 1993 World Series clocked at 4 hours and 14 minutes. Unfortunately, Toronto won 15-14.

Let's hope the Phils power through September into October...Tonight: Halladay takes the mound against former Phil Happ.

The album, 1-Bit Symphony, comes with the chip in a jewel case, also containing other components including a headphone jack. This lets you play the music through the case itself! In his words, the chip isn't playing back recorded music, it is creating it live with the electrical signals produced when you activate it. The Village Voice described it as "technology and aesthetic rolled into one," which really sums it up. Simple, creative, accessible and fun.

Design student Jeremy Innes-Hopkins has created a packaging kit for a new brand called Scratch. The brand provides one box per meal that holds all of the raw ingredients. Everything is washed, chopped and measured out locally by hand. The meal feeds one and cooks in about 20 minutes, using as little as one pan.

The current meal offerings are vegetable red thai curry, a Moroccan chicken tagine, a Crayfish, tomato and feta pasta and Chicken and chorizo Jambalaya. The packaged meals are currently being sold in select stores in London.

"There is more to life than increasing its speed." - Gandhi

Thanks goodness it’s Friday and the weekend is just beginning! Hot days, long hours and crowded commutes make it hard to relax, but it is so important. Relaxation is crucial to maintaining your well-being and heath. Relaxation reduces blood pressure, decreases muscle tension and of course, lowers stress levels. The more relaxed you are, the more energy you will have, which makes you more effective at problem-solving and being efficient.

Here are a few ways to relax this weekend:

-Take a long walk through Fairmount Park
-Watch a movie with a friend
-Start a pick-up game of soccer on your block
-Join Philip Clark, owner of Run by the Training Station, for a one hour on Saturday morning at the Piazza at Schmidts to learn to become a better runner!
-Drink iced chai tea at High Point Café in Mt. Airy
-Go for a swim or head to the beach
-Read the City Paper front to back
-Tend to your garden

The watch is supposed to unglue us from our laptops, smart phones and desktops, getting us in touch with the natural time teller – the sky.

The gadget, called “Re: Time of the Sky,” shows colors that correspond with the blues of the sky, instead of traditional hour and minute hands and digital readings. The watch shows one of 24 shades of blue for each hour of the day. The side button on the watch will reveal the saturation of the sun or moon, so that you can tell the exact time of day.

Ryohei teamed up with media artist Tomoya Kahimada to help with the programming of the watch.

The kicker? He carves these items out of pencil tips. Using an X-acto knife and a large dose of patience, Ghetti has created incredibly detailed and impressive works out of a mundane and somewhat outdated format.Originally from Brazil, he now lives in Bridgeport, CT and is a carpenter by trade. He is currently working on a collection of teardrops, one for each victim of the September 11th attacks. He carves one every day, and should be finished by 2012.

In an effort to combat the increasing number of hours British citizens spend on the couch each week, the National Trust has arranged the creation of large grass sofas. The Trust has installed and grown ten couches, distributing them across British towns.

The installations, which are useable, encourage citizens to venture outdoors, while providing them with the familiarity and comfort of a couch. With obesity on the rise in the western world, encouraging people to get outdoors is one of the first steps in healthier living.

Earlier this summer I blogged about Novella Carpenter coming to speak at the Free Library of Philadelphia. Of course I went. She was smart and witty! I immediately bought Farm City: The Education of An Urban Farmer and added it to my summer reading list. After some late nights, long afternoons and morning commutes on the train, I finished all thirty-six chapters.

Carpenter charms and educates in Farm City. She humorously narrates her personal experience as a farmer in the raw Oakland neighborhood of Ghost Town.

At first her journey begins with a handful of egg-laying chickens, and culminates with the emotional experience of butchering her two 300-pound pigs. Throughout the memoir, Carpenter confronts her beliefs about eating meat, questioning how one can raise and nurture an animal to kill it. Ultimately she recognizes and embraces the complexities of food and the intimate relationship between human and animal.

Carpenter’s writing is honest and real. Her voice comes across as reliable and entertaining. Without bogging readers down with too much detail, Carpenter engages them with her explorations of farming and cooking. In addition, she creates a vivid literary landscape of Oakland, its residents and its challenges.

Farm City is a perfect summer read! It might even inspire you to do some farming of your own.

I'd like to see one for Philly.

This Wednesday the Philadelphia Union – the city’s new major league soccer team – will host the English Premier League Champions, Manchester United. The teams will face off at the Lincoln Financial Center. In February 2008 the Union became the 16th Major League Soccer team. In April, in front of 34,870 fans the Union played its Home Opener, beating D.C. United 3-2.

In 2009, the team received a name, crest and color. The Union’s colors are navy blue and gold to represent the Continental Army’s uniforms during the Revolutionary War. The Union’s main crest is circular to symbolize unity, and the thirteen gold stars around the bottom of the crest represent the thirteen colonies. The shield shows a rattlesnake, illustrating the 1750s idea of the rattlesnake as a symbol of the dangers of disunity.

Instead of installing objects that will more safely secure bicycles, Scott saw the potential for a bicycle that could provide good storage safety measures itself. The traditional logo will take on a more modern form, adapting to better reflect young women and connect them to the activities of Girl Scouts.

The logo face-lift came from designers Jennifer Kinon and Bobby Martin. The changes to the logo are subtle, but the faces have been elongated and the hairstyles updated to appear more stylish and youthful. In addition, the noses are perkier to imitate younger girls. The existing logo dates back to 1978 and was designed by Saul Bass. As well as altering the logo, Kinon and Martin modified the typeface, using “Avenir” and have used a warmer, more playful green. It is appropriately called “Girl Scout Green.”

In 2012 Girl Scouts of America will celebrate its 100th anniversary with the new logo, hoping to attract a new generation of young women and girls.

Teamed with local communities, The Let’s Colour Project’s goal is to eliminate the gloominess of grey walls and transform them with colorful paints. The worldwide initiative is led by Dulux, Dulux Valentine Coral and Marshall. Their mission is to spread color all across the globe.

So far The Let’s Colour Project has added color to schools, streets, squares and homes. Right now they are painting in Istanbul, Turkey. The project is a 400 year old unique street of Istanbul called “Ayrilik Cesmesi Sokagi” (The Fountain of Departure street).

His design is called the Darwin chair and is one piece from the Dutch collective Droop.

Sagmeister has applied graphic design concepts to furniture. The top patterned sheets, when worn or when the user is in need of a change can be ripped back, revealing a new pattern. Each pattern abstractly illustrates a stage in the creation of the universe, the beginning of plant, animal and human life, all the way to the digital revolution.

The Darwin chair employs a free swinging structure and as the used patterns are folded back, they form a headrest.

So, relax this summer...in style.

Doodle is a relatively new service that helps coordinate both formal business meetings and casual lunch dates with busy friends. Even more convenient, Doodle is now an iPhone application, so I can track and initiate meeting requests from anywhere.

Doodle allows you to set up a poll, meaning that you indicate available meeting times. Next you can invite participants, by directly inputting their email addresses or sending out the link to whomever you want to participate. Doodle compiles a count of the available times that most poll participants are available, allowing you to schedule gatherings with the most available participants.

In 2008 Doodle won the Open Web Awards, which celebrates major innovations in web technology.

This season captures the diverse flavors of the city, promising to be "most creative and inventive" season yet. Padma Lakshmi – cookbook author and actress – will return to host alongside Tom Colicchio, recent winner of the James Beard Award, and Gail Simmons of Food & Wine Magazine.

Although none of the chef'testants live or work in Philly, Lynne Gigliotti is a Philly native currently residing in Hyde Park, NY. Lynne is an Assistant Professor at the Culinary Institute of America. For the past few years, she has been active and interested in sustainable agriculture and seafood. Right now, she’s my fan favorite!

I'm looking forward to creative dishes, design savvy presentations and of course, drama. This season will also have appearances by D.C. influencers Apollo Astronaut Buzz Aldrin, Speaker of the House Nancy Pelosi, Assistant White House Chef Sam Kass, MSNBC host Joe Scarborough, and CIA Director Leon Panetta. Watch tomorrow night at 9/8c on Bravo TV.

My friend has a number of their cameras, including one that has four lenses in it that takes four pictures in rapid succession. She likes to hit the shutter then toss the camera up in the air. The pictures that result are surprisingly focused, reasonable and exciting. Their new camera, the Spinner 360, has a pull cord that spins the camera around on its handle to take full-circle panoramic shots. I want one.

Brasil, the Netherlands, Portugal, the USA, South Korea, Australia, New Zealand, Serbia and Slovenia will all be wearing Nike’s new team jerseys.

To make the 2010 uniforms, Nike fabric suppliers used discarded plastic bottles from Taiwanese and Japanese landfill sites. The bottles were melted down to produce new yarn that was converted into fabric and used for the jerseys. Compared to using virgin polyester, this process reduced energy consumption by 30% and prevented nearly 13 million plastic bottles from going into landfill sites. According to Nike, if the number of recycled bottle used to make the jerseys were laid end-to-end they would measure the length of the whole South African coastline.

With these innovations Nike hasn’t sacrificed the quality of their jerseys. The uniforms have been designed to keep players cooler, more comfortable and better equipped to play the total 90 minutes. GAME ON!

They created, under the guidance of longtime graffiti artist Stephen Powers, the Love Letters project. The painted walls show a series of witty and sentimental phrases and illustrations that narrate the evolution and power of love.

The project expands beyond painted walls. In addition to two books and a documentary film, the Love Letters project includes a sign school and shop that provides instruction for area youth and free signage for businesses on the Market street corridor. One of the books is small, paperback and was given to businesses for free. The other book, on sale now, is hardback and documents the artwork, the neighborhood and inspiration behind the project.

Love Letters is a project of the City of Philadelphia Mural Arts Program and is sponsored by the Pew Center for Arts & Heritage through the Philadelphia Exhibitions Initiative. The Love Letters project also received support from the Brownstein Group and Septa.

The book chronicles Carpenter’s experience as she raises vegetables, chickens, rabbits, ducks, goats, turkeys, pigs and bees as a transplant to one of Oakland’s most perilous neighborhoods, nicknamed “GhostTown.”

Carpenter stands her ground as an emerging food writer, recording the rewards of farming in gritty urban America. At the Berkeley’s Graduate School of Journalism, Carpenter studied under writer and food expert Michael Pollan. She continues to keep readers entranced with her lively blog, Ghost Town Farm, which provides updates and pictures of Carpenter’s activities as both an author and farmer.

The event will begin at 7:30 p.m. and include Q&A with the audience and a book signing.

Beginning in 1994, The Free Library of Philadelphia has hosted Author Events that offer Philadelphians the opportunity to engage in meaningful dialogue with today’s most celebrated voices in the humanities and sciences.

I played soccer in college and still play in a local league in Philly. Anywhere I travel in the world, I always find a game. What fascinates me about the sport is that it transcends all boundaries: gender, race, class, etc. I've learned so many life lessons from soccer about the importance of teamwork, communication and dedication.

If you couldn't tell already; I'm a huge soccer fan and very excited about the 2010 FIFA World Cup, which is only one week away!! US has to face England in the first match on June 12 and is also grouped with Slovenia (vs US on June 18) and Algeria (vs US on June 23). Even if you are not a fan; don't miss your chance to witness some of the best athleticism out there.

Why is that? To watch the LOST series finales that airs this Sunday, of course. (If you don't know about LOST; check out this Lost Encyclopedia). After six seasons of heart pounding, axiety-filled episode, we've finally reached the conclusion of this epic story.

It's not only the drama that's left us gasping at each commercial break, but how they incorporated sound design into the program as well. Sound is used strategically to enhance the viewer's experience and plays with emotion beyond what the storytelling can accomplish.

Watch this video featuring Sarah Silverman and the Executive Producers of LOST for alternative sounds and some Q&A.

It was clean, legible and begged me to open the envelope. The contents: my friend's save-the-date card for her wedding. Immediately, I texted her to let her know how much I liked her font choice (weird? maybe).

It got me thinking about all the fonts we see on a daily basis and, more specifically, the fonts we use to express our brands. It is a very personal statement and oftentimes taken for granted. Our advice: Be selective and take your time picking YOUR font. Whether for your business, organization or personal branding; find a font that works for you. Contact us if you need help in that department. ;)

For their upcoming documentary "The Sign Painter", Faythe Levine and Sam Macon are traveling around the country visiting the folks that have been hand-lettering signs for years. The pictures of these people, their studios and workshops provide a glimpse into an almost lost art form.

Making sure every sentence has punctuation, words are spelled correctly, grammar, colors, font sizes...there are so many pieces to the puzzle. Someone once told me that a good way to proof is to read each word backwards. This takes patience, but it does work. I always recommend to have at least one clean set of eyes review before you go to production. It may add time, but in the end, it could save money!

FontStruct is a free, web-based tool to create a custom font. It uses a basic geometric grid to allow a user to build a font system that can then be downloaded as TrueType fonts used in Mac or Windows applications. Once logged in, you'll also be able to interact with other users in their network.

We think it's pretty cool. Try it!

<![CDATA[Jared Spool Talks About Treasure From Amazon]]> http://www.bajdesign.com/blog/82/Jared-Spool-Talks-About-Treasure-From-Amazon http://www.bajdesign.com/blog/82/Jared-Spool-Talks-About-Treasure-From-Amazon Tue, 20 Apr 2010 09:47:10 -0500 http://www.bajdesign.com/blog/82/Jared-Spool-Talks-About-Treasure-From-Amazon Last night at National Mechanics, Refresh Philly and PhillyCHI cohosted an event featuring Jared Spool, user interface guru and principal at User Interface Engineering. Spool took the audience through his ten years of researching Amazon in a very charismatic presentation. He explained (1) why Amazon is able to have the lowest competitve pricing, (2) how they get the most user-generated content and (3) what you should consider when building an e-commerce site.

(1) Amazon sells its inventory on a about a 22-day cycle; then, pays for the inventory on about a 44-day cycle. This allows them to build interest on the 20 days between. Other competitors are not able to sell their inventory until about 64 days; thus, they rely on short-term credit and have to keep their selling price points higher.

(2) Amazon is the most successful online retailer because they sell the most product. Additionally, they get the most user-generated content in the form of reviews -about one review for every 1,300 sale. When your selling rate is about one every 24 seconds; that equates to a lot of comments. Additionally, they allow useful information such as how people rate the product with one star, two stars up to five stars. You can also click if a review was helpful or not. Then, when you click into a product's review page, they organize by what users rated "The Most Helpful Favorable Review" and "The Most Helpful Critical Review." I'm pretty sure you've been to Amazon and tried to convince yourself not to buy that product...I know I have, which is why I respect them for being so transparent with their negative reviews.

(3) In my post yesterday, I stated, "Design matters." When you are designing a site; it is so important to think about the user and how they will navigate and make decisions along the way. How do you build trust in the products you are selling? Is it easy to make the purchase on your site? Think about the tools you need to design with as well as the tools your customers need to get through your site. Amazon has listened to their customer base and understand that answering the question, "When will this product be delivered?" is essential so they show the answer in five different spots on the same page. They've been able to calculate what these small additions (or subtractions) make on their bottom line.

There is no argument, Amazon's business model has proven to be successful. Thanks, Jared!

She is very immersed in the content that she wants to send into cyberspace and even has a binder full of information that she's been collecting over the past two years. However, when it comes to the design and organization of her blog; she needed help thinking about the user experience of her readers.

It made me realize that not everyone is focused on design aesthetic. That being said, I feel strongly that when you are ready to create your web presence; you should put your best outfit on. Consistency in grammar and formatting is important even for small things like using same number of spaces after a period. Remember, it is a two-way street: design matters.

According to the Wall Street Journal, "It has been downloaded 205,000 times, giving the Walt Disney Co. unit a presence on nearly half the 450,000 devices that Apple says it has sold. Moreover, users have watched at least part of 650,000 television episodes using the app, generating 'several million' ad impressions."

ABC’s iPad advertisers include AT&T, Sears, Lexus and Target. Disney has also reported that the most popular broadcast has been a March 31 episode of "Modern Family," portraying one of its characters wishing for an iPad on his birthday, which conveniently fell on iPad launch day. Disney hopes it can earn additional revenue through 30-second ads and in-video links to buy episodes on iTunes.

There will surely be more and more business opportunities realized on Apple's iPad...stay tuned as we report the most innovative.

The device moves like a Segway, except instead of having two giant wheels, there's one omnidirectional wheel. Rather than standing up, you get sit and relax. Another advantage: it is foldable and very lightweight, weighing about 22 pounds. Honda has applied the stabilization technology from their Asimo robot to this new device.

The rider assumes the posture of a unicycle rider with feet resting on pedals. Movement is controlled by shifting the weight of your upper body and turning is achieved by dragging one foot, similar to dragging a paddle on a kayak. While I still prefer human powered traveling via my legs, Honda's design is pretty neat.

In 1974, Volkswagen introduced the Golf (or Rabbit) as a successor to the venerable Beetle. It was a huge success internationally, but what the company did next made history. With some mechanical magic, they sported up the normal Golf and created the GTI, giving birth to a whole new segment in the auto industry: The Hot Hatch.

But why do I mention a car when the title to this blog clearly states iPad? Well you see, last saturday also happened to be the North American launch of the Apple iPad, and as I was taking the astonishing MKVI GTI out for a drive, I got a phone call that my iPad had been delivered. It was a tough choice, but I headed home in my MKV Golf as quickly as possible.

The iPad is, in a word, incredible. Hold one and you’ll immediately fall in love with it’s beautiful screen, solid feel, and multi touch interface. Browsing the internet feels natural, watching movies is a joy, and getting some work down is also fun. What Apple has done is created a whole new segment of the computing world.

It’s difficult to put in words how revolutionary this device is. Go to an Apple Store and hold one, get online, type on it, play a game, and you’ll know soon enough what I’m talking about.

Apple has created the GTI of tablets. Just like the car, many will follow, but none will be as refined, well built, or as fun as iPad.

Next week is Milan Design Week. While (sadly) we will not be attending, we wanted to highlight a collaborative project between Apartamento Magazine and DesignMarketo: FoodMarketo. This half pop up shop and half cooking workshop combines the contemporary designs of over 30 international designers with daily workshops to share recipes and ingredients. FoodMarketo marries two of our passions: food and design. Perhaps something similar should pop up in Philly...

I smell some competition brewing between these south Philly neighbors. However, this futile effort to claim the spotlight has slight potential to last until 1:05pm today when our Fightin' Phils take the plate in Washington, DC (ironic?).

This is a good move for the Eagles. But, as I posted on Friday, Philly is now a baseball town. Sorry Reid.

That means two things: allergies and baseball. Because of the former, I just sat in my doctor's waiting room for almost an hour. Lucky for me; however, they had the current issue of Sports Illustrated with our very own superstar Roy Halladay on the Phillies' red cover. I read their take on Halladay's history, which they described with more dramatic detail than all of the articles in People Magazine. The disclosure of his depression and intense commitment to the sport gave me more of an appreciation for our new pitcher. There is more to him than just being the early bird at the training facility.

A few pages after the article, SI predicted the outcome of how the Major League teams will rank this season. Our Phillies are (obviously) listed #1 in the NL East. I'm a little curious about the decision to move Victorino down in the lineup, but the results of the past few years have built trust in Charlie Manuel's decisions.

On that note, it seems that everyone in Philadelphia has transformed our city into a baseball town. Maybe it's the random Phanatics everywhere, but, hey, it's a good time to be a Phils fan!

The Phillies home opener is Tuesday, April 12 against Washington at 3:05pm.

However, I have always been a fan of their clever branding and marketing strategy. The simplicity of the colors and design along with the choice of font makes their brand strong.

Recently, they reintroduced their mascot, Dunkie, in celebration of their 60th anniversary. This vintage character got a modern makeover. They also updated their chunky typography to a more italicized script. I'm not a fan of this move, but the application on their packages does look good.

(Incentives do work.) I actually won! Well, someone else won first, but didn't claim the prize so my name was second on the list.

The Flip HD has changed my life. That's a bit overdramatic (I know), but this pocket-sized camcorder is pretty cool. It captures 120 minutes of HD footage including sound. There is a built in USB arm that plugs right into your computer. It even has its own application called FlipShare that makes it easy to edit and distribute videos. Yes; I sound like a commercial, but I see the value that this $200 product can have on businesses and organizations. Videos are such a powerful medium and this cost effective tool makes production that much more accessible. We're sure to see a huge increase in the amount of video content on the web in the near future.

We recommend that every business and organization utilitize this way to connect with your community. That being said; there are a few things to consider when strategizing your campaign:

1. Be personal. "Dear Stephanie," is a good start. If you don't have your recipient's name; then, please don't send an empty field in your email. Don't make this faux pas (see image).

2. Target your list. Take personal to the next level. Speak to your audience and find out what their needs are. Show them that you are paying attention.

3. Keep it simple. Our space is invaded all day long with emails, ads and other distractions. Be concise and try to use an image to convey the emotion you are trying to say with words. Remember a picture is worth a thousand words.

Also, they have a brick and mortar store front just outside of Philly. They wanted something earthy, yet classy. We went with an illustrated truck with an eggplant, tomato and corn in the same treatment. The simplicity of the color palette and font set the warm tone and transcend the energy of their women-owned business.

Over 500 people attended the full day conference eager to learn tactics to grow their businesses. All of the presenters and conference organizers shared knowledge on important facets of business such as technology, email marketing, social media, community and networking as well as how not to design a business card (contact BAJ Design if you need help in this department).

The main event was Seth Godin's talk which, deservedly so, received a double standing ovation. Godin's use of power point is by far the best that I have ever witnessed: most of the slides are only images or video and a few contain a small amount of text. He fused ideas from his books: Tribes, Linchpin and Purple Cow. Godin claims that something fundamental in our society has crumbled; and, as a result, the idea of marketing has evolved. You can transform your business by being remarkable (think of a purple cow). More and more, people want to feel like they are part of a community -online and offline. So, as a marketer, business leader, etc. think of how you can establish and grow your network (tribe). Simply put: “Ideas that spread, win."

The most interesting notion that Godin posed was how we should view ourselves. He believes that everyone is an artist and we need to share our gifts with the world. He stressed two key points: 1. Replace the fear of the unknown with curiosity. 2. Push boundaries. It seems that Godin is realizing the pressure that most of us feel and gave this final advice: always take some quiet time for yourself.

If you don't already; I highly suggest you read Seth's blog daily. Also, watch his TED talk.

Thank you, Seth Godin!

Strozyk has created a series of textiles made out of laser or hand cut geometric wood pieces, which are then attached to a textile base by hand.

Strozyk came up with the idea when working with pieces of scrap in her school’s wood shop. The use of wood in the product creates a new tactile experience, and forces designers and consumers to rethink the materials traditionally used.

The wooden carpet can lie flat on the floor and walked upon, or be manipulated into various 3D shapes.

<![CDATA[Prophesying Facebook]]> http://www.bajdesign.com/blog/62/Prophesying-Facebook http://www.bajdesign.com/blog/62/Prophesying-Facebook Mon, 15 Mar 2010 11:12:53 -0500 http://www.bajdesign.com/blog/62/Prophesying-Facebook This weekend I had the opportunity to watch a documentary about one of the most famous internet pioneers you've (or I've) never heard of. We Live in Public directed by Ondi Timoner, chronicles the life and times of Josh Harris, an eccentric, sometimes brilliant, ex dot com millionaire.

Throughout the 90's, Harris started Psuedo.com, and internet TV station that merged "streaming" video and chat to create a new kind of social entertainment. Think of it has YouTube's great grandfather, and remember this was the 90s, so no broadband (56k at best). This was way ahead of it's time, but when the dot com bubble burst, psuedo went with it.
But in 1999 (right before the crash), Harris was kicked out of his own company (with good reasons) and cashed out his stock. He had millions, and decieded to create a social experiment called "Quiet: We Live in Public". This was an Orwellian style "Hotel" in the heart of NYC. Imagine living in a place where everything was on camera, and everyone could see anything you were doing at all times. And, I do mean anything (think about that for moment). But, despite the lack of privacy, and voluntary iterrogations, Harris was getting at something: Here's a quote from the film during the filming of Quiet, what does it make you think of?

"Everything is free except your image. That, we own."

Remember, this is late 1999. Myspace, Facebook, flickr, none of these sites existed yet. Josh Harris saw that this was where the online world was going: A giant network where our personal information was stored, analyzed, and sold.
While certainly a bizzare experiment (which quickly got out of hand), Quiet was revolutionary. Harris later began to film himself and then girlfriend Tanya Corrin at their home and dubbed the site "We Live in Public". The site, and the relationship, eventually tanked leaving Harris penniless and drowning in debt (so much that he currently lives in Ethiopia to escape his creditors).

If you have some time, and want to learn about something truly strange that happened right underneath our noses at the turn of the millennium, do pick up a copy of We Live in Public. It may be a bit disterbing at times, but truelly fascinating. You can find it on the iTunes store for buy or rent.

The theme this year is Business & Technology: Strategies for the New Economy. (My favorite) marketing author and blogger, Seth Godin, will give the keynote: Insights on Being Indispensable To Your Customers. Other sessions are: Strategies for Success From Grow Your Business Experts, Stand Up Comedy Techniques to Increase Sales, Building Community: Successful Women Share Their Stories, and more.

If this sounds appealing to you; there is still time to register for the Small Business Summit 2010. Hope to meet you there!

For my first blog I'd like to talk about something I've been very psyched about for months: Apple's upcoming iPad.

Let's get one thing out of the way: Yes, the name is unfortunate but forgivable (After all, who knew what an iPod was back in '01?).

Many of us have felt a bit of Deja Vu during the month leading up to launch. In 2007, as the iPhone was readying for launch, we wondered if it was worth $500 for a just a phone, and no one (including Apple) had any idea where it would go (or how much revenue it would bring in in just 3 years). So, once again, we're left with the question: Is a tablet worth
$500?

The answer in short is YES (in all caps if possible). But today I just want to focus with it's application for professional (or not) designers and design firms.

Multi-touch, the technology behind the iPhone's screen, is magnified to a 10" Screen on iPad. Imagine if you will: An iPad version of Photoshop where you could simply touch the canvas and shrink, enlarge, move, twist, and more, all by just touching it. Imagine having intricate maps of a client site loaded on an Illustrator for iPad app, and bringing this tablet into meetings for easy review with colleagues or just for reference. The A4 Chip (The custom designed CPU made just for iPad) and everything behind the scenes on iPad are capable of this and more.

This is just the tip of the iceberg. Just like iPhone, Apple has given developers the tools and means (via the App Store) to deliver groundbreaking new functions to iPad.

iPad preorders start on Friday, March 12th and will be released on April 3rd. Visit apple.com/ipad for more info.

Hello, I'm Carlo Webb, BAJ Design's Tech Guru.

<![CDATA[HOW TO: Design Custom Twitter Background]]> http://www.bajdesign.com/blog/54/HOW-TO-Design-Custom-Twitter-Background http://www.bajdesign.com/blog/54/HOW-TO-Design-Custom-Twitter-Background Fri, 5 Mar 2010 11:55:16 -0500 http://www.bajdesign.com/blog/54/HOW-TO-Design-Custom-Twitter-Background We just updated our Twitter background so I thought it would be useful to share this process. Opening a Twitter account and implementing a social media strategy for your organization is an exciting step towards connecting with your audience. Since you've probably spent money on the design of your brand. (If you haven't, contact us). Now, it is time to extend your identity through this social media application.

First, upload your picture. Click then, click to upload an image. This image appears next to your tweets as well as on your profile page. Make sure the picture that you upload is a square. Resize your image if needed so it does not cut off words or part of your design. Try Pixenate for an online, easy to use resource.

Next, design your personal Twitter background. Mashable's HOW TO: Create Custom Twitter Background blog entry is a good resource to consult. Be sure to keep your image under 800k in size. The dimensions should be around 1600px wide by 1200px tall.

Here's 6 helpful Twitter background resources from Mashable:
     1. MyTweetSpace: MyTweetSpace is one of the simplest ways to create a Twitter background with minimal effort. It allows users to create badges, add graphics, play with text, and more to create elegant backgrounds and left-hand text columns. You can even log in with Twitter and MyTweetSpace will automatically update your background.

    2. TweetStyle: TweetStyle offers free background templates, custom Twitter backgrounds, and a few useful blog posts on the subject of the backdrop.

    3. Free Twitter Designer: This handy little app provides an easy-to-use image editor to help you create a professional-looking theme.

    4. TwitBacks: This is another tool for creating backgrounds. This one specializes in left-hand column-based backgrounds.

    5. TwitterGallery: TwitterGallery is a directory of themes based on color and category. You can even click the “install” button under any theme, log into Twitter, and poof!…your background is ready.

    6. Peekr: If you stumble across a great Twitter background and want to take a quick look at it in its pure form, the Peekr bookmarklet is the way to go. Click on the bookmarklet once to show only the background, and press it again to bring everything back to normal.

The program is part of a worldwide network, Ignite, that spreads across 65 cities, 6 continents, 500 speakers over 5 days. Each presenter is given 5 minutes to present 20 slides conveying whatever topic or point they choose. They idea is to spread a message while inspiring, entertaining and engaging without trying to sell anything.

The spark began with City Councilman Bill Green and Philadelphia CTO Allan Frank describing their need to recruit ideas to implement Google’s new Fiber project to our city. To learn more, use #phillyfiber on Twitter or visit Technically Philly’s article.

My favorite speaker was Jaime Salm. He explained how his company, Mio Culture, is bridging the gap between business and sustainability through design. While it is important to focus on the origin of the materials used in product design; it is just as important to create a product with a useful life.

Ignite Philly is sure to fire up again in the upcoming months. My advice: buy your ticket early before it sells out.

With spring training for the upcoming 2010 season starting, the Phillies and Citizens Bank Park are encouraging their fans to participate in their green initiative with small steps to reduce their carbon footprints, both at games and at home. As for the Phillies’ efforts for a cleaner environment, they are collaborating with Global Spectrum (the Citizens Bank Park operators) and Aramark (the Phillies food and beverage provider).

Some of their steps toward reducing their carbon footprint include purchasing 20 million kilowatt-hours of Green-e Energy Certified Renewable Energy Certificates (RECs) to offset the team’s utility power usage at Citizens Bank Park. 2009 was the second consecutive year that the Phillies purchased 100% renewable energy for the calendar year; one year is equivalent to planting 100,000 trees. Additionally, the “Red Goes Green” team is present at every home game to collect and promote recycling efforts. As a result, the Phillies have seen an improvement in their recycling rate over the year of 2009.

Let’s go PHILLIES!!

Every year, about 60 professional florists, landscapers and horticultural and educational organizations create full-scale gardens and floral displays. Designers compete for numerous awards, including “Best in Show” for their respective categories.

Make plans to check out this year's show, "Passport to the World," at the Pennsylvania Convention Center from February 28 to March 7, 2010. Fore more information, visit the main website and follow @PhilaFlowerShow on Twitter.

The car manufacturer unveiled prototypes during its three month tour of potential target markets across the United States. The Leaf can go 100 miles before needing to recharge, and Nissan is aggressively pushing their plug-in car to the middle class.

Final pricing will be announced this April, and production will start in August. Nissan's Smyrna, Tennessee, manufacturing plant is slated to build the cars and lithium-ion battery packets for American distribution. A loan from the Department of Energy will create 1,300 additional jobs at the vehicle assembly plant.

Nissan hopes to obtain 20,000 advance orders for the 2011 Leaf by the end of the year. Green conscious cities like San Francisco are preparing for added electric demand by revising building code to require new structures to be wired for car chargers, and looking at ways to lessen the red tape involved in residential charger station installation.

I am renewed by the power of people I have had an opportunity to learn from at TED and, at the same time, struggling with the question if I am doing enough to make a difference. But aren't we all?

As I sit on the train heading home after work tonight, I scan back through my relatively short-term memory to conjure lasting pieces of new knowledge and awareness. I recall the words from speakers that, without question, moved me.

Temple Grandin. She is a livestock handler and autism activist has made her mark. As someone with Autism, she sees in images. She truly sees things "differently" and has applied her "disability" to design humane livestock handling process while teaching us about the untapped talent and resources that those with Autism can bring to the world.

HBO recently released a powerful movie about her entitled, Temple Grandin.

Temple was brilliant, funny and autistic. I was humbled by her energy and passion to use her special gift.

Vancouver geared up to host the event by improving their wayfinding signage on their SkyTrain transit network. From a design perspective, this is an important update to lessen confusion for the projected millions of first time users -attendees, volunteers, media members, athletes and officials.

Good luck to all athletes and participating countries!

When the station opened, it was a stub-end terminal for Pennsylvania Railroad trains serving Center City Philadelphia, replacing the above-ground Broad Street Station in this function. The station's full name was originally Broad Street Suburban Station. One Penn Center served as the headquarters of the PRR from 1930 to 1957.

Plans for a tunnel to link the Pennsylvania and Reading commuter lines were floated as early as the 1950s, but funding to seriously study the project did not start until the late 1960s. The project languished in the 1970s due to lack of funding for the construction until federal money was appropriated during Philadelphia mayor Frank Rizzo's time in office.

The city-wide celebration of local visual and performing arts will take place April 7- May 11, 2011. The festival’s theme will revolve around early 20th century Paris.

-Apple’s tablet computer, the iPad, was unveiled to much fanfare. Will the sleek new device achieve the same popularity as the iPhone, or go the way of its tablet PC predecessors?

-Yale’s Kroon Hall, the new home for the university’s School of Forestry & Environmental Studies, has officially gained LEED Platinum status.

-Last week was Social Media Week! The multi-city conference explored how social media impacts marketing, communications, business and culture. Recaps are posted on SMW’s blog.

Every February, businesses spend millions if not billions of marketing dollars on advertisements during this epic television spectacle. Not a sports fan? You can watch the commercials on Hulu.

Good thing for Google last night's game was a nail biter. Their inaugural commercial (my favorite) aired during the 3rd quarter and was designed to tell a story through google searches that followed someone from studying abroad in Paris, France to getting married to researching how to assemble a crib. It was heartwarming, simple and smart. An article on Wired.com quotes Google CEO Eric Schmidt, “We didn’t set out to do a Super Bowl ad, or even a TV ad for search. Our goal was simply to create a series of short online videos about our products and our users, and how they interact.”

Congrats to the New Orleans Saints (and Google)!

With hurricane season looming, and increased morale needed for the displaced residents, long-term shelter solutions are required.

One potential answer is architect Joseph Bellomo's modular mini-house. Originally designed as a studio for a client in Hawaii and inspired by a previous design for a bike shelter, the structure is comprised of lightweight steel tubes, and can be packaged IKEA-style for easy shipment and assembly. The 150 square foot space can be used as temporary shelter, but is sturdy enough as a long-term solution.

Tonight at the Academy of Natural Science, these two worlds collide for a rockin' presentation sponsored by the Urban Sustainability Forum starting at 6:30pm. Talking Head's David Byrne will be speaking about his recent book, Bicycle Diaries, which chronicles his travels and bike adventures from city to city around the world. Now for the bad news. The event is sold out. BUT, hopefully, they will upload the video to their site...

Other speakers on tonight's lineup are: Katherine Gajewski, Director of Sustainability for the City of Philadelphia; Ignacio F. Bunster-Ossa, lanscape architect and Principal with Wallace, Roberts & Todd; and Alex Doty, Executive Director of the Bicycle Coalition of Greater Philadelphia.

The theme will be “Right Here, Right Now.” About 50 people from around our city came to our office space that we share with ex;it to volunteer in the planning process.

What’s TED? TED’s mission is simple: spreading ideas. “TED believes passionately in the power of ideas to change attitudes, lives and ultimately, the world. So they're building here a clearinghouse that offers free knowledge and inspiration from the world's most inspired thinkers, and also a community of curious souls to engage with ideas and each other.” (via TED.com)

Farewell.

Instead of teetering and balancing like a Port Fishington bike polo wannabe, cyclists are encouraged to rest a leg or arm on the unobtrusive double railings while they wait for green light. The discreet rails offer a viable stopping point for commuter who may be tempted to dodge traffic or zip through a red light, in turn, subtlety reinforcing safe cycling practices.
