This season I've been into fall cleaning. It is not much different than its cousin, spring cleaning. I'm preparing to make a clothes donation in time for the winter and saving some scraps to make something crafty with my sewing machine.
I'm inspired by what others do with "trash" and wanted to share a story about Jason Mecier – a San Franciso based artist – who has been making trash into art for about 15 years. He get his materials from different sources – friends, family, fans and sometimes the subjects themselves.
1800Recycling says: "Mecier's mission is to capture the...

The Canadian company iQ has come up with a line of smarter cleaning products. iQ is unique because it is composed of a line of reusable bottles and sprayers. Their patented REFill (Reduced Environmental Footprint) concentrate cartridges allow customers to simply fill the bottle with their own tap water, insert a cartridge and then clean. This product’s reusability reduces customers’ carbon footprints by decreasing the need for the transportation of heavier, newly bottled cleaning materials. iQ says that using their product, compared to other cleaning materials, results in a 95% reduction in plastic use a carbon footprint reduction...

With the launch of the first World Cup game today comes the debut of Nike’s eco-friendly and technologically-advanced team jerseys made from recycled plastic. Brasil, the Netherlands, Portugal, the USA, South Korea, Australia, New Zealand, Serbia and Slovenia will all be wearing Nike’s new team jerseys.
To make the 2010 uniforms, Nike fabric suppliers used discarded plastic bottles from Taiwanese and Japanese landfill sites. The bottles were melted down to produce new yarn that was converted into fabric and used for the jerseys. Compared to using virgin polyester, this process reduced energy consumption by 30% and prevented nearly 13 million...

IKEA – the world’s largest home furnishing company – released the 2009 Sustainability Report, reinforcing their dedication not only affordable style, but also to the environment. IKEA strives to transition from “doing things right” to “doing the right things” by partnering with WWF to reduce supply chain emissions, to develop environmentally responsible transport services for customers and to improve reuse and recycling practices.
IKEA has looked at sustainability globally and has also included customers in the movement with the launch of the 'Never Ending Job' list. The project aims to encourage customer engagement and education about IKEA’s sustainable programs...
"The care of the Earth is our most ancient and most worthy, and after all our most pleasing responsibility. To cherish what remains of it and to foster its renewal is our only hope."

Philly's Center City District (CCD) hangs about 3,000 banners per year. But, what happens to the fabric after the banners come down? To address the end-of-cycle use, CCD recently partnered with a local nonprofit, Baker Industries, to create tote bags. These eco-friendly bags are unique to Philly and are now being sold at some Center City stores. Other districts are soon to follow this green sewn solution.

As of April 2008, the Philadelphia Phillies launched the “Red Goes Green” initiative, a program designed to lead the way in clean energy movements at professional sports venues. By doing so, the Phillies became the first MLB team to join EPA’s Green Power Partnership (GPP) program. The GPP is a voluntary program that encourages organization to buy green power as a way to reduce the environmental impacts associated with purchased electricity use.
With spring training for the upcoming 2010 season starting, the Phillies and Citizens Bank Park are encouraging their fans to participate in...
Nissan Motor Company's first all-electric car, the Leaf, won't come out until next year, but anticipation is high (possibly since they launched their TV commercials). The car manufacturer unveiled prototypes during its three month tour of potential target markets across the United States. The Leaf can go 100 miles before needing to recharge, and Nissan is aggressively pushing their plug-in car to the middle class.
Final pricing will be announced this April, and production will start in August. Nissan's Smyrna, Tennessee, manufacturing plant is slated to build the cars and lithium-ion battery packets for American distribution. A...

Two things I'm passionate about: music and environmentalism. Tonight at the Academy of Natural Science, these two worlds collide for a rockin' presentation sponsored by the Urban Sustainability Forum starting at 6:30pm. Talking Head's David Byrne will be speaking about his recent book, Bicycle Diaries, which chronicles his travels and bike adventures from city to city around the world. Now for the bad news. The event is sold out. BUT, hopefully, they will upload the video to their site...
Other speakers on tonight's lineup are: Katherine Gajewski, Director of Sustainability for the City of Philadelphia; Ignacio F....

Simple metal rails have popped up at some intersection sin the bike-friendly city of Copenhagen. Instead of teetering and balancing like a Port Fishington bike polo wannabe, cyclists are encouraged to rest a leg or arm on the unobtrusive double railings while they wait for green light. The discreet rails offer a viable stopping point for commuter who may be tempted to dodge traffic or zip through a red light, in turn, subtlety reinforcing safe cycling practices.
